Review : Starship Troopers 3 (2008)

Starship Troopers 3 : Marauder is the third installment in the Starship Troopers franchise. It was directed by Ed Neumeier and released in 2008, straight to DVD. The movie marks the return of our favorite character : Johnny Rico, portrayed by Casper Van Dien.

The war against the bugs continues. John Rico is a Colonel, in command on a farmers’ planet the bugs are attempting to take over. During a bar fight, Rico prevents a farmer protesting the war from being shot. This is viewed as treason by the Federation and Rico is arrested for insubordination. Soon after, the Sky Marshall and a group of soldiers get stranded on a deserted planet. When there is a plot to take power during the Sky Marshall’s absence, a general saves Rico from execution and sends him on a rescue mission.

I have a very low opinion of the first sequel, Hero of the Federation and I didn’t think the franchise could sink any lower. Unfortunately it does with Marauder despite decent special effects and an interesting plot.

I was very happy to see Johnny Rico returns, unfortunately, even he can’t save the movie. The acting is horrendous and the dialogues are atrocious. Most of the characters (almost everybody except Rico) are unlikable and the horrible acting increases that feeling.

The CGI works most of the time with the bugs though the robots are just plain horrible. The addition of religion was cringe-worthy and laughable. But what permanently killed the movie for me was when the giant bug began talking to the Sky Marshall.

The only redeeming aspects of the movie are the propaganda ads which are well handled and the return of Casper Van Dien. But overall, I would recommend staying as far away as possible from Starship Troopers 3 : Marauder.
